Why do we have to pay more when our cell phone is roaming?

its not our fault the cell phone cant find any service

Answers:

another one of those rip-offs so they can make us shell out more money than we already do. It%26#39;s a classic rip-off isn%26#39;t it? cause they tell u what area is roaming and what isnt, going outside of the area means ur using antennas that wern%26#39;t meant for u, so ur adding unexpected traffic to them which creates other problems The phone companies claim that it is because they do not have towers in the roaming areas, in which case you have to use another company%26#39;s tower. When you use another company%26#39;s tower, your company has to pay them for the use of it. However, I believe that now it is just a ploy to get more money out of people. I think that there are towers pretty much everywhere unless you are really out there... like Wyoming... Yes it is not our fault that we can not find our network. This is a capitalistic world though and everyone wants their share of the pie. Would you want let everyone use your lawn mower to mow their grass with out any payment? Maybe let someone borrow your car for a trip across the US? Phone companies have to maintain the antenna%26#39;s that they use to send data to where ever it goes. They get the money from the subscribers to their service. The cost of the antenna%26#39;s alone are very high. Some phone companies do not want to place antenna%26#39;s everywhere so they make a deal with a company that does have and antenna in a particular area. You don%26#39;t get anything for free ya know? So we have to pay more for using someone else%26#39;s antenna. It%26#39;s our fault that we picked a phone company that is too cheap to have their own antennas. Ok, I work for a cell phone company. This is 100% truthful. Some of the smaller companies do not have very wide areas of roaming. Plus every cell phone company has roaming partners for some areas that they just can%26#39;t afford to put up a cellsite/tower. What you get charged extra for is the fact that the cellphone company has to pay the other carrier for these agreements, as well as pay them for any calls placed from their towers. True, it does not cost $0.69 per call or $0.99 or whatever, but it does cost more then a normal call. The companies are in the business to make money, so they charge even more when you make a call from a roaming area. There is something you can do to help, but not guarantee anything. You have what is called a preferred roaming list on your cellphone. It changes what other carriers your phone should use, if they can%26#39;t get your carrier%26#39;s signal. By updating this, you can ensure that you will be charged roaming for the least amount that you can be. Most carriers update this by dialing *228 while you are on your home network. Check with your carrier to make sure that is the correct thing to dial.
